21 Days of Happiness

Happiness matters. It matters a lot according to Shawn Achor, author of the Happiness Advantage. He posits that happiness leads to success, rather than the widely-held assumption that success leads to happiness.

This idea has been percolating in the AISC community for a while. This book is the choice for a faculty book club two years in a row, and the leadership team read it over the summer.

One of the key ideas from the book is around the idea of "positivity in the present". We can train our mind to scan for the good and positive in the world and create a happiness advantage. Achor shows that this happiness advantage increases our intelligence, creativity and energy. In addition, people with the happiness advantage are more productive and better decision makers.

What can we do to be happy? Journal, meditate, exercise, act kindly and be grateful.

So we challenge you to 21 Days of Happiness! This challenge starts November 3 and lasts through to November 23.

Your job is to write up to three things that make you happy each day for over the next 21 days and share them with our community.

Parents, Teachers, and anyone with a social media account:
  • Post up to three new things that you are happy for each day and #HappyAISC. Make sure you profile is public if you want us to see your posts.
  • Mention @AISChennai
  • Each post will be entered into the drawing for a prize.
  • Be sure to like/follow us on Facebook, Instagram and/or Twitter.
If you don’t have social media or are too young to have a social media, come and share your happy thoughts in the main courtyard.

Contact Kirsten Welbes at wkirsten@aischennai.org if you have any questions.

November's book is The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri

"Meet the Ganguli family, new arrivals from Calcutta, trying their best to become Americans even as they pine for home. The name they bestow on their firstborn, Gogol, betrays all the conflicts of honoring tradition in a new world - conflicts that will haunt Gogol on his own winding path through divided loyalties, comic detours, and wrenching love affairs."
