Koyambedu Market Outing

Have you ever wondered how all the fruits and flowers get to your local shops? The Koyambedu market in the center Chennai is where everything comes into the city. We will explore the market on Friday, March 9.

We will begin the trip around 9:00 in the morning with a ride on the metro to the Koyambedu stop. From there it is a short walk to the markets. Covering over one square kilometer, there are separate sections for fruits, vegetables, and flowers. We will spend some time wandering the markets and then the bus will greet us and pick us up to take us to lunch. We will be back to school between 2:00 and 2:30.

For this trip, wear comfortable shoes that you don’t mind getting a little wet or dirty. Bring drinking water, a hat, and some pocket money. The metro costs 40 rupees and exact change is helpful. You’ll also want your camera to try out your photography skills in one of the most photogenic places in Chennai. Keep personal belongings to a minimum as we will be covering a lot of ground.

If you are interested in attending, please sign up here.

Hangers Needed for Women Empowerment

The Nandri Trust aims at enabling women to earn their own money and thereby to make their own choices and become self-reliant through tailoring and stitching projects.

Since 2009, underprivileged and poor women from rural villages around Mahabalipuram are identified and enrolled in the Nandri Program. Currently 25 women benefit from this program, and 8 of them are already earning their livelihood.

One way that people can help is by donating hangers for them to display their clothing and stitching projects. Please bring your hangers to AISC and place them in the boxes found by the ATMs near the ES and Main Entrances, starting Monday, February 12 and ending Wednesday, February 21.

If you have any questions, please contact Virginie at virginiedyvoire@hotmail.com.

Saravanna Shopping Spree

T. Nagar is the heart of Chennai and Usman Road is the main artery that connects the neighborhood together. It also happens to be the busiest shopping street in the world. On any given day there are thousands of people walking from shop to shop, admiring the silk sarees and shining gold jewelry. On the weekends, it turns into a veritable river of people flowing down the street. Ladies dress in their finest clothes as they browse the windows lining the street.

On Friday, February 23 we will take a trip to the heart of Chennai to see some of the iconic shopping destinations that attract shoppers from all over Chennai. Our trip will include stops at Saravana Stores to explore 8 floors of clothing and home goods. We will continue down the street to Saravana Jewelry, which has different floors dedicated to different types of jewelry, including diamonds and gemstones. We will also visit Nalli and learn a bit more about what makes a Kancheepuram silk saree unique and then finish our shopping at a typical metalware and housewares store. Hidden treasures can often be found in these shops. We will end our tour with lunch at BKR hotel, a rooftop multicuisine restaurant with a gorgeous view of the city. Sign up online here if you are interested. You will need money for lunch and if you decide to do any shopping.
