November has proven to be a very wet month, but it was not enough to dampen the spirits of the 15 participants who attended a glass cutting workshop at Goli Soda Glass Studio on November 21. Taking a detour from the usual sightseeing trips, the PCA organized this workshop with glass artist Radhika Krish. Upon reaching her studio in Palavakkam, the attendees got a tour of the facilities and a demonstration of the different tools used in making glass art. After the tour, Radhika led a hands-on workshop on glass bottle cutting. Glass bottle cutting is a great place to begin working with glass because it is DIY friendly. All you need is a glass scoring tool, a candle, and a bucket of ice water. Each participant tried their hand at scoring the bottle, heating the score mark, and then dropping the bottle into the ice bath. If scored and heated properly, the bottle breaks cleanly at the mark. At this point the studio became very noisy, with everyone polishing the edges of their bottles. Many people chose to have their pieces glued together into a vase or dish or other piece. Everyone came away with a DIY project to be proud of.

Scoring a bottle using a basic glass scoring tool.

It takes only 50-60 seconds to heat the score mark to the perfect temperature.

Radhika demonstrates how a cut piece can be remade while another participant dips their bottle in the ice bath.

Using coarse and then fine grit, Radhika demonstrates the technique for getting a polished edge.

The entire group poses in the studio after completing their projects.

Next PCA Outing

As we near the end of the first semester, many of us will go home for the holiday break and others will leave Chennai for good. The PCA is planning a shopping trip to Cane and Bamboo and Spencer Plaza on Monday, December 10 at 9:00. Both of these places are great for finding lovely souvenirs of Chennai or even the perfect Christmas gift. We will arrange a bus for the trip and we will stop for lunch before returning to school. There will be no charge to attend this trip, but you will need spending money for the various shops. Sign up here because space will be limited.

PCA Social Outing
For our November outing we will be shifting indoors to avoid getting caught in the rain. We will visit Goli Soda Glass Studio in Palavakkam for a glassmaking demonstration and hands-on workshop. Space is limited on this one, so be sure to sign up as soon as possible.

The workshop will take place on Tuesday, November 20 starting at 9:00. We will meet at school at 8:30 and carpool to the studio in Palavakkam (behind the Singapore Shopee). The morning will begin with Radhika Krish, the owner and designer of Goli Soda Glass, giving us a demonstration of different types of glassmaking, including lamp work and glassblowing. After her demonstration, she will lead us through a hands-on workshop of glass bottle cutting. You will go home from the workshop with a one of a kind creation made by you. After the workshop ends, we will gather at Sitcom in Neelankarai for lunch. The cost for the outing is 1500 for the workshop (payable to the cashier) and then the cost of your lunch. We will return to school before 3:00.

Please note you may want to bring your own bottle to work with. Radhika does have a stash of bottles to choose from, but if you have a particular bottle you would like to work with, please bring it along.

Radhika Raguraman Krish was born and raised in Delhi and studied Information Management Systems at George Mason University in the United States. After a career in tech, she chose to go back and get a BFA in glass making and design from the Ohio State University. She and her husband Srini and their four children have called Chennai home for the past four years. She opened Goli Soda Glass Studio to share her passion for creating works of art with the community. If you are interested in attending this social outing, please sign up here.
