Staff coming for luncheon
This past week we have had so much going on!  Where to begin. We began with kids coming back from MS MUN in Malaysia, with SAISA  Boys Basketball, Girls Soccer, Track and Field, Student Conference for both ES and MS, Tech Training, and in between all this was the PCA Faculty and Staff Appreciation Luncheon.  Such a busy week!  We are becoming a busy school - which is a good thing!

Mochi being served
Time to eat
The Faculty and Staff Appreciation lunch was catered by Chef Talwar, who catered out Diwali Mela.  The food was mostly North India, with a few dishes that were different - a manchurian, pasta, and sambhar sadham.  All the desserts were made by our parents.  This made the mix between east and west a wonderful taste explosion.

In the background, many parents made thank you cards and got flowers for their teacher.  Many of these were given to teachers by the end of the day.  As parents, we hope that those gifts were a great way to top off the day for our teachers.

From brownies, to cake, to custard cakes
As a PCA Team, we thank all the parents who made this event possible.  We also thank all parents who are there for support the school.

From the Desk of your PCA Team ....

The week has gone as a speed train. So much is occurring in the next few weeks and preparations are in full swing.  Next week, we will have the Faculty and Staff Appreciation Luncheon on the 20th of April from 11:30-2:30 at the FAC Atrium.  We hope you will join to celebrate the work that our Faculty and Staff do for us. As the PCA, each year we appreciate our teachers by hosting a luncheon for them to thank all for the work that they have done with our kids.  So many of our teachers are the unsung heroes of our kids lives.  Bringing a small spark to our kids, which brings our kids, what I call, the "ah-ha" moment. The moment where our child "gets it."  They take this and from there, the children can begin to make their way to the top.  We hope you will join us to make this luncheon special for all of our teachers.  When I think back this year, we all faced the biggest challenge as a community - our floods.  So many of our teachers were faced with challenges that water damage caused.  I am sure they all faced many personal losses.   But, when school was back in session, they came back with smiles and ready to make the day even brighter for our kids.

The staff, maintenance and security, of our school are really the unsung heroes of this institution.  As we carry on with our daily jobs in the school, for faculty teaching, to administrators having meetings, to parents meeting and kids being kids... the whole facility is run like a boat on smooth waters. As an institution we have faced floods, dead debris on the road, and heavy traffic each day both in the morning and the evening. The staff have "magically" made the whole process seem seamless.  I can recollect so many questions that came my way about sanitation, health conditions and more right after the floods.  Many of the staff had their homes washed out.  Some I spoke to personally, were sitting in on top of furniture for the days of the highest water levels with little to nothing for food supplies. When school reopened, they were all back.  Happy faces to make sure that the school was a safe and clean place for all.  With the help of our school Staff, the safety of the areas outside the classrooms were made safe for our kids.

With personnel like this, the school has made a big difference for the community. Thus, on the 20th, it will be a way to celebrate these extraordinary individuals and their dedication to the school.  I hope you all will join us to say thanks to these wonderful people.

PCA Ball

Tickets are being reserved right now, but will be on sale starting next week, Monday from 8:30-9:30 and then in the afternoon at 2:45-3:45.  Do book your ball ticket as soon as possible.

Tamil New Year
This past week was the Tamil New year.  We wanted to share some information about it for your reading pleasure.

Puthandu (Tamil புத்தாண்டு Puttāṇṭu), better known as Tamil New Year, is the celebration of the first day of the Tamil new year in mid-April by Tamils in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in India, Sri Lankan Tamils and Indian Tamils of Sri Lanka, and by Tamils in Malaysia, Singapore, Réunion and Mauritius. On this day, Tamil people greet each other by saying "Puttāṇṭu vāḻttukkaḷ!" ( புத்தாண்டு வாழ்த்துக்கள்) or "Iṉiya tamiḻ puttāṇṭu nalvāḻttukkaḷ!" (இனிய தமிழ் புத்தாண்டு நல்வாழ்த்துக்கள்). The festive occasion is in keeping with the Hindu solar calendar.

Origins and significance

The Tamil New Year follows the vernal equinoxand generally falls on 14 April of the Gregorian year. 14 April marks the first day of the traditional Tamil calendar and is a public holiday in both Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka. The Tropical vernal equinox falls around 22 March, and adding 23 degrees of trepidation or oscillation provides the Hindu sidereal transition or Nirayana Mesha Sankranti (the solar transition into the constellation of Aries). The Tamil calendar thus begins on the same date observed by most traditional calendars in India as in Assam, West Bengal, Kerala, Manipur,  Mithila,Odisha, Punjab, Tripura, Nepal, Bangladesh, Burma, Cambodia, Laos, Sri Lanka and  Thailand. The 60-year cycle is ancient and is observed by most traditional calendars of India and China, and is related to 5 revolutions of Jupiter, or to 60-year orbit of Nakshatras (stars) as described in the Surya Siddhanta.

The 60 year cycle comes by 5 revolutions of Jupiter and 2 revolutions of Saturn. The relative position of Jupiter and Saturn in one particular year will be repeated after 60 years. The 60 year cycle was essentially conceived for predicting the climate of a particular year, as the relative position of the two major planets, Jupiter and Saturn, is recognized for its impact on climate.

The traditional Tamil year starts on 14 April 2016 [Kali Yuga 5118]. The year may also be dated according to the Vikram Samvat or Saka era.

There are several references in early Tamil literature to the April new year. Nakkirar, Sangam period author of the Neṭunalvāṭai, wrote in the third century that the sun travels from Mesha/Chitterai through 11 successive signs of the zodiac. Kūdalūr Kizhaar in the 3rd century refers to Mesha Raasi/Chitterai as the commencement of the year in the Puṟanāṉūṟu. The Tolkaapiyam is the oldest surviving Tamil grammar that divides the year into six seasons where Chitterai marks the start of the Ilavenil season or summer. The 8th century Silappadikaaram mentions the 12 Raasis or zodiac signs starting with Mesha/Chitterai. The Manimekalai alludes to the Hindu solar calendar as we know it today. Adiyarkunalaar, an early medieval commentator or Urai-asiriyar mentions the twelve months of the Tamil calendar with particular reference to Chitterai. There were subsequent inscriptional references in Pagan, Burma dated to the 11th century C

Happenings Around Town . . . .
'OPERATION ICE CREAM 3rd Edition' taking place this Sunday April 17th from 3 to 5 pm at Chinna Neelangarai Kuppam Fishermen Village

‘Namma Beach Namma Chennai’ in collaboration with the ECO CLUB & the High Honor Club of the American International School of Chennai, will be conducting a beach cleanup this Sunday, April 17th at the Chinna Neelangarai Kuppam Fishermen Village  (end of MGR Salai) from 3 pm till 5 pm.
The Advent Christian School of Injambakkam and the fishermen village youth are invited to help!
This activity aims to educate the local people about the impact of the environment being polluted and the role that we, the citizens, play in cleaning our beaches.
As an incentive to encourage people to collect waste on the beach, we are partnering with the local ice vendors to provide a free ice cream to each child in exchange of a bag filled with trash or waste.

This collaboration between ‘Namma Beach Namma Chennai’ and the ice vendors intends to advocate eco-friendly behaviors so that people comprehend the need to trash their waste in designated areas instead of throwing it around the beach.

Furthermore, we hope this initiative will motivate the practice of throwing trash in designated areas for a long-term cause and not only during the beach cleanup.

April 8, 2016

From the Desk of your PCA Team ....
April has already come... as we welcome in April, the heat in Chennai is kicking up. The month of Kathri will be beginning soon.  In much of Northern India, the Harvest of winter crops are being harvested.  This is the beginning of Vasant Navaratri, also known as Ugadhi.  The festival is known as Vasant Navarati in Gujarat and Ugadhi in Andra Pradesh. We thought we would take a few moments to give you some history of both of these traditions.

Japanese Cooking Demo
Beyond the celebrations, we had our Japanese team of parents design a beautiful cooking Japanese Cooking demo at the Westin this week.  The cooking demo started with making Maki rolls - sushi rolls.  Did you know that Maki means the action of rolling?  We learned this new. Then we made different types of tempura.  Interesting was that we learned how to make sure that the tempura batter did not come off the pieces.

With each piece items that we made, the best part of the process, was tasting each items as we went.

Ugadhi
Yugādi (Ugādi, Samvatsarādi, Telugu: ఉగాది Ugadi/Yugadi, Kannada: ಯುಗಾದಿ Yugadi, Konkani: युगादि Yugādi and Marathi: गुढी पाडवा Gudi Padwā) is the New Year's Day for the people of the Telugu, and Kannada communities[further explanation needed] in India. It falls on a different day every year because the Hindu calendar is a lunisolar calendar. The Saka calendar begins with the month of Chaitra (March–April) and Ugadi marks the first day of the new year. Chaitra is the first month in Panchanga which is the Indian calendar. In some parts of India it is known as Vikram Samvat or Bhartiya Nav Varsh. Mostly prevalent in Andhra Pradesh, Telengana, Karnataka and Maharashtra. Gudi Padwa which is the Marathi new year is also celebrated on the same day.

The name Yugadi or Ugadi is derived from the Sanskrit words yuga (age) and ādi (beginning): "the beginning of a new age". Yugadi specifically refers to the start of the age we are living in now, the Kali Yuga. The Kali Yuga began when Lord Krishna left the world. Maharshi Vedavyasa describes this event with the words "Yesmin Krishno divamvyataha, Tasmat eeva pratipannam Kaliyugam". Kali Yuga began on February 17 or 18, at midnight, in 3102 BCE.
Preparations for the festival begin a week ahead. Houses are given a thorough wash. Shopping for new clothes and buying other items that go with the requirements of the festival are done with a lot of excitement.

On Ugadi Day, people wake up before the break of dawn and take a head bath after which they decorate the entrance of their houses with fresh mango leaves. The significance of tying mango leaves relates to a legend. It is said that Kartik (or Subramanya or Kumara Swamy) and Ganesha, the two sons of Lord Siva and Parvathi were very fond of mangoes. As the legend goes Kartik exhorted people to tie green mango leaves to the doorway signifying a good crop and general well-being.

It is noteworthy that we use mango leaves and coconuts (as in a Kalasam, to initiate any pooja) only on auspicious occasions to propitiate gods. People also splash fresh cow dung water on the ground in front of their house and draw colorful floral designs. This is a common sight in every household. People perform the ritualistic worship to God invoking his blessings before they start off with the new year. They pray for their health, wealth and prosperity and success in business too.Ugadi is also the most auspicious time to start new ventures.

The celebration of Ugadi is marked by religious zeal and social merriment. Special dishes are prepared for the occasion. In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, eatables such as "pulihora, bobbatlu (Bhakshalu/ polelu/ oligalu) and Pachadi" and preparations made with raw mango go well with the occasion. In Karnataka too, similar preparations are made but called "puliogure" and "holige". The Maharashtrians make "puran poli" or sweet rotis.

Vasant Navaratri

Navaratri is a festival dedicated to the worship of the Hindu deity Durga. The word Navaratri means 'nine nights' in Sanskrit, nava meaning nine and ratri meaning nights. During these nine nights and ten days, nine forms of Devi are worshipped. The tenth day is commonly referred to as Vijayadashami or "Dussehra" (also spelled Dasera). Navaratri is an important major festival and is celebrated all over India and Nepal. Diwali the festival of lights is celebrated twenty days after Dasera. Though there are in total five types of Navaratri that come in a year, Sharad Navaratri and Vasant Navratri are the most popular one. Hence, the term Navaratri is being used for both but mainly Sharad Navaratri here.

The Story of Vasanta Navaratri

In days long gone by, King Dooshibago was killed by a lion when he went out hunting. Preparations were made to crown the prince Sudarsana. But, King Yudhajit of Ujjain, the father of Queen Lilavati, and King Virasena of Kalinga, the father of Queen Manorama, were each desirous of securing the Kosala throne for their respective grandsons. They fought with each other. King Virasena was killed in the battle. Manorama fled to the forest with Prince Sudarsana and a eunuch. They took refuge in the hermitage of Rishi Bharadwaja.

The victor, King Yudhajit, thereupon crowned his grandson, Satrujit, at Ayodhya, the capital of Kosala. He then went out in search of Manorama and her son. The Rishi said that he would not give up those who had sought protection under him. Yudhajit became furious. He wanted to attack the Rishi. But, his minister told him about the truth of the Rishi's statement. Yudhajit returned to his capital.

Fortune smiled on Prince Sudarsana. A hermit's son came one day and called the eunuch by his Sanskrit name Kleeba. The prince caught the first syllable Kli and began to pronounce it as Kleem. This syllable happened to be a powerful, sacred Mantra. It is the Bija Akshara (root syllable) of the Divine Mother. The Prince obtained peace of mind and the Grace of the Divine Mother by the repeated utterance of this syllable. Devi appeared to him, blessed him and granted him divine weapons and an inexhaustible quiver.

The emissaries of the king of Benares passed through the Ashram of the Rishi and, when they saw the noble prince Sudarsana, they recommended him to Princess Sashikala, the daughter of the king of Benares.

The ceremony at which the princess was to choose her spouse was arranged. Sashikala at once chose Sudarsana. They were duly wedded. King Yudhajit, who had been present at the function, began to fight with the king of Benares. Devis helped Sudarsana and his father-in-law. Yudhajit mocked Her, upon which Devi promptly reduced Yudhajit and his army to ashes.

Thus Sudarsana, with his wife and his father-in-law, praised Devi. She was highly pleased and ordered them to worship her with havan and other means during the Vasanta Navarathri. Then she disappeared.

Prince Sudarsana and Sashikala returned to the Ashram of Rishi Bharadwaja. The great Rishi blessed them and crowned Sudarsana as the king of Kosala. Sudarsana and Sashikala and the king of Benares implicitly carried out the commands of the Divine Mother and performed worship in a splendid manner during the Vasanta Navarathri.

Sudarsana's descendants Sri Rama and Lakshmana also performed worship of Devi during the Sharad Navarathri and were blessed with Her assistance in the recovery of Sita.

According to the Krittibas Ramayana, Rama invoked the goddess Durga in his epic battle against Ravana. Although Goddess Durga was traditionally worshipped in the late spring, due to contingencies of battle, Lord Rama had to invoke her in the form of astam (eighth) Mahavidya (Maa Bagla) in the autumn and thus is known as akaal bodhan (invoking out of scheduled time). This autumnal ritual was different from the conventional Durga Puja, which is usually celebrated in the springtime. So, this Puja is also known as 'akal-bodhan' or out-of-season ('akal') worship ('bodhan'). This Rama's date for the Navaratri puja has now gained ascendancy and culminates with Dusherra in North India on the following day.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend and have a Happy Ugadhi to those who are celebrating.
