From the desk of your team....

Dear Friends,

Final exams, holiday parties, winter concerts...this has been a busy week for all of us as we prepare for our winter break.  Before we scatter to all parts of the globe for the holidays, we would like to give you a preview of upcoming PTA activities in the new year:
  • The team updating the Chennai Chapter will be asking for your recommendations, so please think of your favorite places in Chennai, dig out those business cards, and be ready to share your wisdom!
  • Andrew Hoover, Head of School, will be forming a PTA Task Force to review the PTA structure and bylaws, and realign with the school's overall strategic vision.  Look for more information beginning in January.
  • Planning for the PTA Ball, our major fundraiser, will be in full swing in the new year.  We welcome your input and energy on the planning team!
We wish you all a very happy new year, and look forward to seeing everyone back at AISC on January 6.

Have a wonderful and safe holiday to you all.  Happy Holidays and a very Happy New Year to you all.

PTA Task Force

As part of the strategic planning process last year, our Community Action Team suggested that the purpose and structure of the PTA be reviewed, aligned to our Mission and Values, and perhaps revised. Following the New Year’s Holiday, we will be forming a PTA Task Force to assure that our PTA is designed to do the best work possible on behalf of our students – Pre-K-12 – and in partnership with the school’s teachers and leadership. Interested? Look for more information in January.

From the desk of your team....

Dear friends

Hope you all had a wonderful thanksgiving break.  Thanks you to all who made it to the PTA meeting, Tuesday, December 3rd.  We are fast approaching the end of first semester and another holiday season is around the corner.  In this season of benevolence wanted to share something that came up while browsing the internet.  "The internet has become a weapon and schools have become the battleground.  We need to teach our children how to be kind and not to be critical.  We can do that only by our actions. Do not let our self worth be determined by a few cool words."

The community was treated to a musical afternoon by the MS band and choir.  Thank you the faculty and administration for this show.  The parent curriculum coffee was about the common core standards being implemented in language arts and Mathematics in the school.   Please refer to Kim Bane's presentation in the HOS notes for further details.

Have a nice weekend.

Diwali Mela News

Dear all
On behalf of the the PTA Executive Team, Viraj and I would like to express our gratitude to all the Diwali Mela planning and execution team in making the Diwali Mela a grand success.  You have all been responsible in bringing about magic in spite of the very short time frame that was available to us.  The magic of the Mela was felt by each person who was inside the auditorium on Saturday evening.
A big congratulation go out to each team, the coordinators and above all to the children who performed.
Our big thanks goes out to the administration, the facilities staff, the sound engineer, the personnel department and the purchasing officer.  We would not have been able to accomplish any of this without their support.  Like a string of pearls every aspect was meticulously done.
We ask the community please do share your thoughts / make suggestions for better handling of any aspect of the event for future years.

Hats off to you all.

Many Thanks,
Shanti and Viraj

From the desk of your team....

This week has been one of the quietest that we had in school since the beginning of the school year.  We hope  many of you were able to enjoy it.  We all are used to sharing but the joy is all the more when we can bring smiles to the faces of really unknown people.  Parents from the Elementary School are participating in an initiative called "Giving Tree" which has been put up in the ES cafeteria.  Further information about the Giving Tree is below.  There are certain items that cant be really gift wrapped but would still warm the hearts of a lot of people.  We are sharing the email from one of the parent volunteers.  Please refer to the ES Principal Notes for information on this project.

Right after the Thanksgiving holidays we have the PTA meeting on, Tuesday, December 3rd where we showcase our ASA Team and our Theater Team.  We look forward to seeing you all at this last meeting before the Christmas Holidays.

A Happy Thanksgiving to the community.

From the desk of your team....

Dear Friends,

A big thank you to all the student volunteers who put on the show for the Diwali Mela, all the parents who worked behind the scenes to bring out such a fun-filled event for the community, and to the innumerable hands that came to our assistance in various ways.  It was a true display of how when we work as a team anything is possible.
After all that hectic activity, we had a quieter week till Wednesday.  O fcourse, there is always something going on at school and we were treated to a wonderful display of theatrical talents by the MS Theater Production -- in fact, their first, and a hilarious show which even 5 and 6 year olds enjoyed.  Some parents were pleasantly surprised when their little ones did not mind the time!!!
During the Town Hall meeting on Thursday, the Head pf School gave us an insight into the Emergency drills conducted in the school regularly as well as Admissions and Recruitment process.  We would highly recommend you to refer to the HOS notes on additional information and get to know what we as parents need to do if we are on campus.  We also had the Middle School and High school student-led conferences these past two days.  The school was really very colorful this week!!  Thanksgiving is approaching very fast and if you are planning a "staycation in Chennai,"  please do refer to the Community Events of this blog for information on a special lunch.
Until next week!!

Thanksgiving Day Celebration

Thanksgiving is a special American holiday that is traditionally spent with family and friends, thinking about and sharing the things we are thankful for. Most of us here in Chennai are away from our extended families, but we are not without a close community of friends with much to be thankful for.

The Westin on Velachery Road is hosting a traditional American Thanksgiving buffet on Thursday, November 28th and has agreed to provide a special offer and buffet time for members of AISC. Please plan on arriving between 12:30 and 1:00 to enjoy a welcome drink and visit with friends. We will proceed with the “Carving of the Turkey” at 1:00 pm and open the buffet at that time. This will be a ticketed event and tickets will be on sale before and after school outside the main reception Monday, November 11th through Wednesday, November 20th.
Special Buffet Offer (inclusive of all taxes):
Adult ticket including alcohol – 2200 Rs.
Adult ticket without alcohol – 1800 Rs.
Child ticket ages 6 – 12 years – 900 Rs.
Children 5 years and under are free
Please note the following are included in your ticket price:
1.              Lucky draw with gifts from the hotel including a) Free Room night stay at the Westin for 2 people b) Brunch for 2 adults and 2 kids at Seasonal Tastes c) Dinner for 2 adults and 2 kids at Seasonal Tastes d) Spa Treatments, and more
2.              Kids arts and crafts session, Sony play station, kids play zone, etc.
3.              Complimentary use of the swimming pool from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm on Thanksgiving Day for those that wish to come early or stay late
4.              Pre-Packaged “left-over” box including turkey meat with cranberry sauce, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy at a very nominal price. (This is my favorite part as I LOVE Thanksgiving Day leftovers!)

Dear Friends,

First of all, thank you for making it to the PTA meeting this week in spite of the change in the timings.  Elementary school parents were treated to a colorful display of artwork and theater on Tuesday.  The little ones dressed up and presented a beautiful assembly on Mahatma Gandhi, Father of this nation.  The highlight was a skit done by the kids to show how they can use the great teachings of Gandhi in their day-to-day activities.
Thanks to all those who participated in the Diwali Mela Survey.  We will get back to you as early as possible with the outcome.

We are in the last quarter of the year, which usually has a lot of activities globally.  In India, October ushers in a spate of festivals.  One such festival is Navaratri, literally meaning nine nights.  It is a salutation to "the source of Energy" worshiped in the form of Goddess Durga.  The first three days and nights are dedicated to thanking the energy created from inner strength (Durga), the next three the energy of spiritual wealth (Lakshmi) which is everlasting, and last three nights and days are dedicated to the energy of wisdom (Saraswati).  While different parts of India celebrate it in different ways, the culmination is the same principle— triumph of good over evil.  Enjoy the local culture and festivities.  Our Pre K-8 library has books on festivals of India as well as an Indian Section.  You may want to check out some for light reading.
And of course we have a lot of activities coming up in the school as well—UN Day, Halloween, Diwali, Thanksgiving, and more.  Take part in any of these and enjoy, learn and grow.

Have fun!!!!
