As an expat, one of the greatest gifts we have is to explore local places, engage in local cultural traditions, and sample local food and even local clothing. What started out as a routine trip to Parry’s Corner turned into a full-on India immersion for the 26 members of the AISC community who set out on a shopping trip this week.
Parry’s Corner, the largest wholesale district in Chennai, is popular among locals and tourists alike. The narrow alleys are stuffed with shops and stalls of all kinds selling everything from paper goods and copperware to wedding cards and sarees. Our visit took us down Mint Street, which houses two Jain temples, as well as dozens of jewelry and saree shops. After a drop off in the flower district, we walked down the narrow lanes to the first Jain temple. Many Jains were engaged in prayer at the time, so we observed from the outside. We next made our way down the street to a small shopping center crammed with all sorts of fabrics and festive ware. We climbed up two flights of stairs and entered into a saree wholesale shop. Stacked from floor to ceiling with every kind of saree imaginable, we all settled down on the floor as the sales people brought dozens of exquisite sarees for us to view. Just about everyone came away with some special to wear for the upcoming festive season.
As we were settling our bills, a loud ruckus came from downstairs, followed by lots of drums and cheering. The upstairs balcony gave us a birdseye view of a very large parade of Ganeshes, getting ready for their march to the sea. Mint Street overflowed with more than two dozen Ganesh floats and close to 10,000 revelers dancing in the streets. After paying, we all made our way downstairs to join in the fun. This forced a change in our itinerary, but everyone had so much fun dancing and cheering, that no one really minded that we did not have much time to visit the jewelry shops down the lane.
To get away from the crowds, we finished off our deep dive into Indian culture with a trip to Sangeetha for dosas and thalis. We could not have asked for a better or more exciting adventure than what we experienced on our visit to Parry’s Corner.
Please note: If you purchased a saree and need the blouse tailored and the saree finished, please sign up for a timeslot with the seamstress and tailor this Tuesday. The seamstress will take measurements for the blouses and a tailor will be present to take orders for custom petticoats. They will return to school in October for a final fitting.
