Do You Need a Saree for Diwali Mela?
On October 4, we will venture out into Parry's Corner to go saree shopping in advance of Diwali and the Diwali Mela. We will visit T. Mangharam where you will have an opportunity to shop for sarees for yourself or for family and friends. The shop also has a great selection of fabric and readymade Salwar Kameez and Choli Lehenga. After shopping, we will eat lunch at Saravana Bhavan. This trip will be limited to the first 12 signups. There will be no cost for this trip, but you will need money for shopping and lunch. T. Mangharam will accept credit cards, but it is recommended you have cash (small bills) for lunch at Saravana Bhavan. If you are interested in attending this trip, please sign up here.

Diwali Mela Performance Callout
If you are interested in performing at this year's Diwali Mela on Saturday, October 28, now is the time to register. We are asking that the performances be 3-5 minutes in length and have an Indian theme. Performances are open to parents and guests, students, faculty, and staff. If you would like to sign up, please fill out this form.

“You get a totally different perspective on the city from here.” This is just what sixteen members of the AISC community experienced on Wednesday, as they embarked on a tour of the Mylapore area of the city via tuk tuk. And these were no ordinary tuk tuks. These were autos driven by women, who were trained as drivers by the SPEED Trust organization, located near Kilapuk in Chennai. The drivers led the participants to several sights, including the Sri Ramakrishna Math temple, Kapaleeshwarar Temple, and the Basilica of St. Thomas.

Seeing Chennai from an auto allows you to really experience the city – the sights, the sounds, the smells. There’s a camaraderie felt between fellow commuters because you are quite literally close enough to converse when stopped in traffic. In this case, the journey is the destination. All the beautiful temples and churches are extra.

Mid-September is a particularly excellent time to tour around Mylapore, the spiritual heart of Chennai. This year, the visit coincided with the start of Navratri, the nine-day festival sometimes known as Dussehra. Dussehra is the celebration of the Mother Goddess taking the form of Durga, the vanquisher of evil. Along with poojas, flowers, and food, families set up Golu in their homes, depicting typical scenes of daily life as a way to honor the gods. Because of this festival, colorful Golu dolls were on display all around the temple roads in Mylapore.

After a satisfying thali lunch at Saravana Bhavan, the participants made their way to Baladarshan, in the heart of the slum, to do a little shopping for fair-trade handbags and visit the adorable children in the crèche, set up by SPEED Trust to care for the small children of the residents of the slum. After a few photos and lots of laughs, the drivers returned everyone back to school. If you are looking for an exciting way to experience Chennai, private tours can be arranged through Human Trip India, a part of the SPEED Trust organization. A big thank you to the AISC Community for making the International Day Picnic a huge success! Thank you to the country coordinators, volunteers, staff, faculty, leadership team, visitors, and guests. It was a wonderful day of fellowship and fun!
