Tamil Speaking Parents Needed
When’s the
last time you were able to go to a single event, and meet a farmer living in
Maharashtra with a ½ acre farm growing Onions, and right next to him speak to a
new age Hydropnics farmer living in Shollinganallur, Chennai. This Sunday,
January 21st, SunnyBee (an AISC Alumni company) will be hosting nearly 100
farmers from across India in Nungambakkam, Josier Street. 100% of the sales go
directly to the farmers, with no middlemen taking any commission. We'll be
having Apples from Kashmir, Strawberries from Mahabaleshwar, Kale from Pune,
and more. Best part, is that AISC Community members get a 10% discount by

Press Release: SunnyBee's Farmer's Market, Jan 2018
On Sunday, January 21st, nearly 100 farmers from across the country will converge in Chennai for a farmer’s market that promises to have the widest variety the city has seen in a single space. Each farmer in attendance is one of the 26,000 farmers that SunnyBee already buys their fruits and vegetables from, but this is the first time they will be selling their products directly to customers.
In addition, keeping true to the spirit behind a farmer’s market, 100% of the sales will to straight to the farmers who grew and harvested the products, with no middlemen (including SunnyBee) taking any cut.
Sanjay Dasari, 24 year old co-founder of SunnyBee, said, “Our team is putting together the event to give farmers a chance to sell their products directly to customers in urban cities. In turn, it gives urban customers a rare opportunity to meet farmers, get to know them and their lives and struggles, and buy freshly hand-picked produce as well.”
Every two Sundays for the past few months, SunnyBee has been hosting farmers in their retail stores in Chennai as a mini-farmers market event, encouraging this kind of discussion and conversation. It was the positive feedback from these interactions, from both farmers and customers, that encouraged the team to hold a large event just after Pongal.
“One of my favorite stories is from our Adyar store – one of the customers started chatting with our farmer, and kept going for 30-45 minutes. They had so much in common. Both had 3 daughters, all the same age, same class in school, etc. Both were volleyball players when they were younger. And both had an interest in farming. The customer was especially taken aback when the farmer pulled out his smartphone and started showing him photos and videos that he had shot on his farm. It really showed me, and everyone there, that people have misconceptions about what it means to be a farmer. Like engineers, doctors, cab drivers, and waiters, for some people being a farmer is an occupation. It’s really very interesting and rewarding to learn about the lives of people who grow your food and have such a strong connection with your every day lives.”
This event will bring together SunnyBee farmers from their pan-India sourcing network, with produce from all across the country, like — Apples from Kashmir, Oranges from Nagpur, Pomegranates from Nasik, Kale from Pune, Lettuce from Ooty, and Strawberries from Mahabaleshwar. Beyond standard produce, SunnyBee will also be catering to upcoming niches like Hydroponics, Microgreens, and organic showcases.
Sanjay continues, “When’s the last time you were able to go to a single event, and meet a farmer living in Nasik with a ½ acre farm growing Onions, and right next to him speak to a new age Hydropnics farmer living in Shollinganallur, Chennai? Indian farming practices are extraordinarily advanced, diverse, and interesting. This event gives people the chance to learn more about it straight from people they would never have met otherwise.”
In addition to regular farmers, the event will also feature new-age farming techniques, like hydroponics startup Future Farms. “The farmers market is a much needed initiative to bridge the growing disconnect between the growers and the consumers. It is a great avenue for people to learn about new technologies such as hydroponics & vertical farming which emphasise on quality & on sustainable ways of food production with minimal environmental footprint. Being a Hydroponics company with our head quarters in Chennai, Future Farms is happy to be a part of this initiative from SunnyBee and support the cause,” says Sriram Gopal, founder of Future Farms.

About SunnyBee: SunnyBee was founded in July, 2015, by a diverse group of people with extensive experience in supply chain, logistics, branding and marketing.
